We started right where you might be today—dreaming of a home that would fit our lifestyle, budget, and personalities. We designed that first home of ours in 2011, a little over a year after getting married, and we learned a lot in the process. Like how important it is to have a clear vision for your project before you start. And how easy it is to fall into decision-paralysis when there are so many design considerations. And how important it is to work with builders you fully trust. Many projects, lessons, celebrity clients, and a national home renovation TV pilot later, and we’ve honed a point of view and process that are the foundation of our work.

Brett grew up on California’s Central Coast surrounded by vineyards and ranch style homes. Kara grew up in small-town Texas where tradition and formality are celebrated values. When we combined our histories and styles, what emerged was a handful of design principles that we live by. Never limited to a genre, these are the common threads woven into each Phillips House project—whether that’s a 100-year-old foursquare, a mid-mod ranch home, or a contemporary log cabin.
